Chican@ & Latin@ Studies Program
May 1, 2003-May 31, 06 Accomplishments

Professor Camille Guérin-Gonzales served as Director of the Chican@ & Latin@ Studies Program (formerly the Chicana/o Studies Program) from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2006. During that period, the Program accomplished the following:
  • Increased the faculty from 3 core faculty members to 16 core and joint-governance faculty members (3 core and 13 joint-governance).

  • Received permission to search for a senior faculty member in Chican@ & Latin@ Studies. Search conducted, Spring 2005. Candidate declined offer.
  • Increased the number of courses offered from 1-3 per semester to 6-8 per semester.
  • Increased the number of Certificate Program Students from 0 to 78. Signed up 40 new Certificate Program students, 2003-04; 31 new Certificate Program students 2004-05; and 28 new Certificate Program students 2005-06. We have awarded 59 Certificates, 30 of those since 2004: 7 Certificates, Spring 2004; 4 Certificates, Fall 2004; 8 Certificates, Spring 2005; 2 Certificates, Fall 2005; and 9 Certificates, Spring 2006. Located missing Certificate Program declaration forms from earlier years and filed them with the College of Letters & Science.
  • Created an official association for students in the Certificate Program, the Chican@ & Latin@ Certificate Student Association (ChiLaCSA). Students have elected a governing board, sponsored graduation ceremonies, and put on a fundraising events as well as other activities. Representatives from the association serve on Program committees.
  • Launched a newsletter, Regeneración (published bi-annually).
  • Established an undergraduate student journal, Concientización (published annually).
  • Approved a name change from the Chicana/o Studies Program to the Chican@ & Latin@ Studies Program to reflect more accurately Program course offerings. Approved revisions to the mission statement. Name change and mission statement approved by the College of Letters & Science Academic Planning Council, Dean Gary Sandefur, and the University Academic Planning Council, Fall 2004.
  • Approved revisions of the Certificate Program curriculum and requirements. Revisions approved by the College of Letters & Science Curriculum Committee, Fall 2004.
  • Established Program Bylaws. Approved by the Program faculty, December 2003. Accepted by the Dean of Letters & Science, January 2004.
  • Drafted and implemented document outlining Program Policies and Procedures.
  • Gathered regularly in Program meetings, faculty meetings, and executive committee meetings since Fall 2003. Established two standing committees: Curriculum Committee and Student-Faculty Liaison Committee.
  • Drafted procedures for probationary faculty review and produced an Assistant Professor Review Guide, approved by the Program Executive Committee, March 2004.
  • Appointed mentors to guide probationary faculty.
  • Completed second-year reviews for two probationary faculty members annually since 2004.
  • Received entitlement to plan an undergraduate major and a graduate minor from the University Academic Planning Council. Planning for an undergraduate major now underway.
  • Submitted a proposal for a graduate minor in Transnational and Comparative Ethnic Studies to the University Academic Planning Council for graduate minor submitted Spring 2006 and approved Spring 2007.
  • Received approval for a Chican@ & Latin@ Studies archival collection to be housed at the Memorial Library. Engaged in historical study of archival materials, and began transferring materials to library. Established a lending film library in the Chican@ & Latin@ Studies Program.
  • Sponsored an innovative on-the-road summer 2005 course entitled “The Santa Fe Trail: In Search of the Multiracial West.” Four Program faculty members, two teaching assistants, a student advisor, and the Program Assistant were involved in this course, which took 35 graduate and undergraduate students from Madison to the Southwest and back again, with stops in Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Course involved 2 classroom days and 16 days on the bus.
